What is the difference between the terms ‘postpartum’ and ‘postnatal’?

Short and sweet today, but definitely still important!

I get asked this question quite a lot, ‘what is the difference between postpartum and postnatal?’ and had to research it properly myself! Professionals, especially in the world of health, coaching and fitness use this term interchangeably, making it confusing, especially if you are looking for a coach, personal trainer, group sessions or advice!

Both terms refer to the ‘time after birth’.

Postpartum - anything to do with the mother post-birth.

Postnatal - anything to do with the baby post-birth.

So, when we go for our ‘postnatal 6-8 week check’, it is to check baby, with a few questions thrown in about mother (keep tuned for another post on this). However, the official Personal Training qualification, where you train the mother, is ‘Level 3 Pre and Postnatal’. Confusing, huh?

Whereas the additional qualification I gained to further my knowledge is called ‘Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism Coach.’

So what is actually the best term to use? Completely up to you! They are used synonymously without people actually knowing the real definitions.

Therefore, if you are searching for services in your local area, I recommend including both keywords in your search to make sure you see everything that is offered.
